DIAMONDS IN THE DUSTBIN – NEED OF HOUR

At Prof. Ravindra Nikam College of Pharmacy, students voluntarily engage in creating their own personal dustbins, which are used as eco-bricks. This initiative addresses the environmental hazards posed by type 1 PET plastic bottles and aluminum-coated plastics. PET plastic, though good for single use, can leach harmful chemicals with repeated use, potentially leading to cancer over time. Aluminum-coated plastics, being non-recyclable, pose a significant disposal challenge, remaining in the environment for up to 1400 years and hindering rainwater percolation while leaching chemicals into the soil.

Soil is a crucial element for growing food, and its preservation is paramount. The concept of eco-bricks targets these issues effectively. Utilizing eco-bricks to build vermi-compost pits represents the best possible use of this innovative solution. The outcome includes the decomposition of biodegradable waste and the distribution of vermi-compost to neighboring farmers, fulfilling our social responsibility. This initiative not only educates students about preventing plastic pollution but also earns them appreciation at the university level during NSS summits. Additionally, students are often invited to speak at nearby colleges, spreading awareness and knowledge about this crucial environmental practice.
